Verbal Reasoning
VR blends vocabulary with logic. It is central to GL and in the ISEB pre-test — but not FSCE. Here is how to help.

Verbal Reasoning (VR) is problem-solving with words. It blends vocabulary with logic, so a child who reads widely and works methodically can do very well. As with NVR, it is not part of every exam — so check your target schools.
What VR involves
- Synonyms, antonyms and word meanings.
- Word analogies and odd-one-out.
- Letter and number sequences, and codes.
- Hidden words, compound words and word building.
- Logic problems and following written rules.
Where VR is — and isn’t — tested
GL AssessmentMost grammar schools
A well-defined set of question types in multiple-choice form. Recognising each type and its method lifts scores steadily.
FSCEFuture Stories
No separate VR paper. FSCE focuses on English, Maths and creative writing. A strong vocabulary still helps English — but there is no standalone VR test.
Independent / ISEBPrivate schools
A verbal-reasoning section in the ISEB pre-test; some independents include it or explore vocabulary at interview.
Check first: VR is central to GL and appears in the ISEB pre-test, but FSCE does not test it separately. Confirm your target school’s format before drilling VR question types.
How you can help at home
- Grow vocabulary daily through reading and a words notebook.
- Play word games — anagrams, crosswords, Boggle, Scrabble.
- Teach the method for each question type, one at a time (for GL).
- Practise spelling and alphabet fluency for letter-sequence questions.
- Add timing gradually once techniques are secure.
Common pitfalls to avoid
- Practising VR with a thin vocabulary — build words first.
- Mixing up question types because methods were never separated.
- Drilling VR for an FSCE school that does not test it.
